Organizing Magic- Step 7: CELEBRATE

Posted on 21 Jan by debbye | No Comments

Women are notorious for not taking credit for their achievements, but when it comes to organizing your life it’s high time to stand up and cheer for your success.

fireworksA word of caution here. Beware of rewards that bring more “stuff” (aka clutter) into your home and office.

Remember that everything you bring into your life from a pet to a pair of shoes will require your time, space, energy AND money to use and maintain it.

Be selective and think of giving yourself some time off to DO something you enjoy. It could be as simple as a bubble bath, a manicure or even enjoying a library book.

Time to Check Your Quarterly List

Posted on 02 Dec by debbye | No Comments

I am getting my life working with a smooth organizational rhythm, moving gracefully thru the inevitable ups and downs. Could your life use a little “rhythm”? Having a quarterly list and/or reminder in your planner (paper or electronic) can be a great way to eliminate stress and stay caught up on some important “Life Rhythms”.

This all started because I needed to remember when it was time to get a fresh mascara! Now you may not be aware (or even care) that mascara preventives only last 3 months, but I did. I wanted a way to remember when I should get a new one. Finally the idea to change on the quarterly business dates clicked for me.

I made a list of other things that needed to be done on a quarterly basis. Now I am organized with a way to remember to get them tended to with the right frequency. I use 15 June, 15 Sept, 15 Dec and 15 March because they are key dates for my business, but any dates spaced every 3 months will work. Choose the dates that are best for you, but I’m setting up reminders in my Tips.com to keep you on track effortlessly.

SMARTcut(TM) Tip: I use my computer calendar reminders. You could also use a colored “DOT” (highlighter or sticker) in your paper planner as a reminder to check your “TO DO” list.

26 Planner

Here are some items I put on my checklist to complete on a quarterly basis.

1. Buy a new mascara.

2. Change my car’s oil. For the longest time I wished there was an oil change business that sent me a reminder. Now I have just determined that on my quarterly dates I will keep this on my “To Do List”.

3. Get a new toothbrush. My dental hygienist told me I needed to replace my toothbrushes every 3 months. So I added one more little thing to my list. I keep a supply on hand so it is no trouble. It was just hard to keep track of! By the way, you also need to replace it a few days after beginning an antibiotic so you don’t re-infect yourself.

4. Change air filters. Finally I realized that I could also change the air filters on our heating and cooling systems on this same cycle.

5. If you make quarterly IRS payments add that to your list too!You may have other things around your home or office that will also work on this cycle.

I find this little technique very helpful to make it easier for me to keep track of these recurring tasks. Are you looking for more help for keeping up with life?

Invest in some LIFE SIMPLIFICATION NOW! You know you deserve it!

What’s on your list?

Holiday Overwhelm Simplified

Posted on 07 Nov by debbye | No Comments

Debbye
Okay – I would love some enlightenment and ideas for simplifying the holidays. We have 4 birthdays, Thanksgiving, a weekend away for just hubby and me, end of semester testing for school, scouting events, a one day convention, special graphics I need to do for the church Christmas celebrations, working on business website, plus Christmas and all those preparations- all in the next 7 weeks. I can’t even imagine making special baked goods, building gingerbread houses and making handmade crafts! How in the world do you simplify? Oops a bit of overwhelm and frustration slipping in there, sorry…
So, if you’re willing to share some ideas, I would truly appreciate words of wisdom before my brain pops.

Suzanne

Dear Suzanne-

I am a real “finding solutions” gal, so here’s the real deal. It sounds like you have allowed too much to come into your calendar. Most of the things you mentioned are choices and how you respond/participate is also a choice. Your expectations of what will “fit” into 7 weeks is unrealistic.

Try putting all the “prep” work that is involved with/ tasks and events on your calendar instead of just the event. This should help you see when your life is getting overly full. For example, block out the time you’ll need to prepare birthday parties (consider one big bash if possible instead of 4). Or do like the Queen of England and spread them out more on the calendar. I understand the Queen’s Birthday is always celebrated in June regardless of the reigning monarch’s actual date of birth. By doing this, everyone could pick more widespread dates and therefore have more personal attention. (Just a suggestion).

Look for other things that might be scheduled into a different time of year and decide if all of these expectation are really worth the stress.

The world will not blow up if you don’t make gingerbread houses or handmade gifts. Those are expectation things you have placed on yourself (or allowed someone to “guilt” you into). Reconsider some of these things.

Bottom line is there is only so much time in the day and com much energy in you. So get real about how much is going to “fit” without making you nuts!
