Home Management Time Gobbler #3-Housekeeping

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Janitor

Ok, maybe you are blessed with a Heavenly Housekeeper, but even so there ARE going to be housekeeping tasks that remain on your list. Learn to work smart by using professional tools and techniques so whomever cleans your space will be effective and efficient. Whether you are doing the work or you are delegating or paying for assistance, you want your cleaning tasks to be done efficiently. By the way, if you hire help I strongly recommend that you look for references AND someone who is both bonded and insured. Give your cleaning team a checklist of what you expect too.

My favorite resource for professional supplies is http://DonAslett.com Don’s products are tried and true and extremely economical to use. His many books on the subject are hilarious to read as well as packed with reliable methods.

There’s even a video on how to clean a bathroom in 3.5 minutes! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIRcjQbpm3w
Teach your kids how this summer!

Tame Time Gobbler #2- Laundry!

Friday, July 17th, 2009

The second area that consistently consumes a lot of time is laundry. Of course, the ideal solution is to have someone like “Alice” from The Brady Bunch TV show. (I actually met the actress once and she was a sweet gal even off camera!). But the reality is, especially in our current economic situation that you don’t have tons of hired help. All you need to do is to get organized to simplify this process.

So what’s the best way to lighten the laundry loads? Read on….

First of all, limit the amount of clothing available. By having less you automatically create less laundry simply because you don’t wait too long to wash! I’ve had friends and clients who actually have loaded their cars with dirty clothes and commandeered the local laund-o-mat just to get caught up. That’s a desperate (not to mention expensive) solution.

soccer boyWhen there are no more clean clothes (or underwear) USUALLY people consider doing the laundry a priority. This can naturally create a consistent schedule and avoid overload.

The biggest time gobbler to doing laundry is the storing before washing and the sorting to deliver clean clothes to various closets and drawers. Save time here by doing laundry loads mostly in cold water (saves energy) by the person which saves delivery time.

The winning solution is to teach your family members to do their own laundry as soon as possible. I worked with my children at age 7 so by age 8 they were independent and in charge of their own laundry management. Think about it. By the age of 8 your kids can operate much more complex equipment than the washing machine can’t they?!

Organizing With Lists

Monday, June 8th, 2009

ListsAnother great secret of Professional Organizers is to make what I call reusable lists. So much of what we do in life is repeated so making master lists can be a big time saver.

Instead of having your own ticker tape parade of lists, use a notebook or electronic computer folder to keep them organized. These can be shopping lists, action lists, and directories which you have frequent occasion to use.

For example, I make a master grocery list. I file it in my computer and print it off (or photo copy) for my main grocery shopping. I do a monthly shopping so I want to make sure I have checked all the foods and supplies carefully to avoid extra trips to the store. Note the quantities you need on hand for the period of time until your next shopping date and even note special brands or sizes. This will give you options to delegate the shopping if desired.

Do you make a certain trip or attend an event frequently? Maybe you could have a checklist of items needed for your speaking engagements, camping trips and such. It saves lots to time if you just write it down once and reuse your list.

Another useful type of checklist is for an activity. Want to make sure chores are really “done?” Give your family or team a checklist of what the job entails. This communication is vital for successful delegation. One mom posted a checklist for cleaning on the back of each room’s door so her 12 (no kidding, she has 12 kids) could complete their assigned duties correctly.

Taking the time to write it down will take a few minutes up front, but if your list can be used repeatedly it will save time and energy for weeks, months and even YEARS to come!

This is my favorite recipe for play dough. It doesn’t crumble and stick everywhere like the store bought type. Enjoy!

Mix and cook on low heat until ball forms. 3-5 min.
4 c. flour
8 Tbsp Cream of Tarter
2 c. salt
1/2 c. salad oil
4 c. water
Cool. Knead until smooth. Divide as desired and add food coloring working in until blended. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

And remember-Life is what you make it, kinda like Play Dough!
