Eliminate Overwhelm

Posted on 07 Apr by debbye | No Comments

closestThe 80%/20% rule applies to so much more than business. It’s about life (and clutter). Most people only use about 20% of what we own. So whether it’s clothes, kitchen appliances or boxes stored in the garage, start with a goal of down sizing just 10% of “stuff”. You’ll have more time and energy to use and enjoy the rest.

Learn more about how to go about down sizing your “stuff”:

Approximate Time: 4 minutes

Getting in a mess with the IRS will surely cost a bundle! Know what to keep, for how long, and where you put it!

Tax Doc storage

SMARTcutTM Solution: I have six inexpensive stacking drawers. One for each of the last 5 years (one year’s tax return & supporting documents) and one for the returns (without supporting documents) for previous years. Now I know where to find everything in a flash.

Cut Accounting Costs

Posted on 17 Dec by debbye | No Comments

Having simple, but effective, methods of record keeping for your business (and family) and save, save, save in book keeping and CPA fees.

If you don’t already have a system in place, try mine.

SMARTcutTM Solution: I use a 1″ three-ringed notebook binder with divider tabs for the categories I need itemized on my tax return. Inside each section is a sheet of notebook paper to record the date, expense and amount and a clear page protector to hold the recorded receipts.

At the end of the year tally each page with an Excel spread sheet (the computer does the math). Give the CPA the totals and save paying for hours of book keeping. Best of all, I feel confident that the numbers are correct.

P.S. My niece scans her receipts monthly to a CD for permanent storage with her tax records. There are also receipt scanning services.

Eliminate Late Fees So You Keep More of your Money!

Posted on 15 Dec by debbye | No Comments

Is it time to plug the holes in your money pipeline so you keep the money you have?

Dollar sign

According to The National Association of Professional Organizers’ statistics, 23 % of Americans have reported that they pay bills late because the bills are lost.

Just this week, I paid an extra 2% on my property taxes in delinquent charges, not because I lost the bill, but because the Post office never delivered it! Financial disorganization costs you in late fees as well as poor credit scores which mean you will pay more for credit.

SMARTcutTM Solution: Consider setting up some reminders in your electronic calendar (such as Outlook or Gmail calendar) to remind you when credit card and other bills are due. Another option is to set payments on auto bank drafts or automatic payments so you don’t miss due dates.
